Active Release Technique
Active Release Technique®️ (ART®️) is a patented soft tissue technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia (connective tissue), and nerves. A multitude of musculoskeletal conditions can benefit from ART. These conditions all have one important similarity: they are frequently the result of overused muscles, causing muscle spasm, scar tissue and eventual loss of function within a region of the body.
What makes Active Release Technique different from other techniques?
The difference between ART and other techniques is that during an ART treatment, the patient actively moves the affected structure (muscle or ligament) while the practitioner presses or maintains contact on the injured area. This allows the practitioner to feel the structure as it moves under their contact, and to effectively treat those restricted muscles, tendons, or ligaments.
Who might benefit from ART?
Individuals who may benefit from ART include:
- Members of the athletic community, both recreational and professional.
- Chronic pain patients with symptoms mimicking an overuse syndrome
- Anyone who has not been able to find relief through conventional therapies
How overuse affects muscles?
When muscles (and other soft tissues) are overused, three types of problems may result:
- Acute conditions such as pulls, tears, muscle spasm or contracture, etc.
- Small tears resulting from repetitive motion (also known as micro-trauma)
- Hypoxia or a lack of oxygen to the injured area
Your body responds to these occurrences by producing tough, dense scar tissue in the problem area. This scar tissue restricts healthy tissues, preventing them from moving freely. As more scar tissue builds, your muscles weaken and become shorter, nerves can become trapped, and the tension that is placed on the tendons might even cause tendon inflammation or tendonitis. Eventually, all of this leads to a reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. In cases where a nerve is trapped, you might experience tingling, numbness, and weakness as well.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage is a form of bodywork that aims to relieve tension in the deeper layers of tissue in the body. Deep Tissue Massage is a highly effective method for releasing chronic stress areas due to misalignment, repetitive motions, and past lingering injuries.
Due to the nature of the deep tissue work, open communication during the session is crucial to make sure you don't get too uncomfortable. Keep in mind that soreness is pretty common after the treatment (Typically for 48-72 hours), and that plenty of water should be ingested to aid with the flushing and removal of toxins that will have been released from the deep tissue during the session.
CranioSacral (SM)
CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle yet powerful technique that is effective in releasing neck pain, back pain, and mental stress (among other things). It does this by optimizing the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spine and around the skull. Developed by physician William Sutherland, this therapy provides a very soothing and relaxing healing experience.
Myofascial Release
Myofascial release is a form of soft tissue therapy intended to eliminate pain, increase range of motion, and rebalance the entire body.
It does this by using massage techniques to stretch the fascia and release the bonds that exist between the fascia, muscles and bones.
Fascia is the connective tissue that connects and covers all muscles, organs, and skeletal structures of the body.
Direct myofascial release is sometimes known as deep tissue work.
Indirect release applies light pressure and gently stretches the fascia; this allows for increased blood circulation and relief from pain.
Neuromuscular Therapy
Neuromuscular therapy/Trigger Point Therapy- is the use of isolated trigger points in the body by pressing on a specific area of the muscle to cause the muscle to relax. By using a holistic approach towards healing, emphasizing and stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself. Neuromuscular therapy also enhances the function of joints and muscles, and accelerates the overall healing process by facilitating the release of endorphins.
Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger Point Therapy is a style of bodywork that focuses on stimulating and releasing "trigger points" in your body. Trigger points are tender areas of tension similar to acupressure points, except they occur in the belly of the muscle rather than along the energy pathways of the body. These "knots" are built up throughout a person's life due to physical, mental, and/or emotional stress. During a session, focused pressure is applied through a variety of techniques order to release your trigger points. This process can be quite painful at times, yet the effects are lasting and profoundly transformative.
My Background
I have been a Parker University Student since 2014. In the time of getting my education I have also taken additional Continuing education classes for additional modalities to specialize in the field of deep tissue massage techniques. I find the various modalities under this genre has had the best benefits to helping the body heal and maintain wellness.
